Things I've made . . .

Here are just a few pics of what I've made recently ....

Gifts for our cat, Peaches
The balls are plastic practice golf balls, which I cut a slit in, then inserted a jingle bell, and then crocheted around it with a bit of scrap yarn,  the knot is a 3"x 11" piece of fabric, folded in half, sewn and stuffed and then knotted.  I thought about buying catnip and inserting it, but our cat doesn't seem overly thrilled with catnip, so I didn't bother.
At right is the stocking I made for her.

The above is the basket I made for my mom.  It's basket #5 for me. :)  I think she liked it.

These are hats that I made for a Secret Santa program in a nearby town.  Hopefully they will help keep three people (kids and adult) warm.

Below are photos of items I made for a online group's secret santa exchange.  I don't think she's opened the package yet, so I'm still hoping she will like them.

Special Olympic Scarf Update

Hello! :)

We had a meeting of our knit and crochet group yesterday .. and lots going on!  Several members finished scarves and so we've increased our total! :)

3rd Scarf by FH

1st Scarf by FH's sister, EH

1st Scarf by NH

1st Scarf by ET
Aren't they great?  That brings our total up to ....

*drum roll please*

25 Scarves for Wisconsin Special Olympics!

Wow ..
Our number will get a little bit bigger, ET gave me a couple of skeins that she didn't think she'd be able to use and I'll probably get atleast 2 scarves out of that.  Also, NH is about 1/2 way through with another scarf - a really neat design by the way.  Can't wait to show you the finished product.. She's doing a great job on it.

I'll be mailing this box the first week of January.  Just wish I could see all the olympians faces when they get the scarves.  I'm sure they'll really enjoy them.

Another big happening, is that the local paper, the Ozaukee Press, came a took a photograph of our group with the scarves and did an article about us! Not sure if it is in this week's or next weeks paper, but I'm going to get a paper today to find out.  I'll let you know when I know!

Special Olympic Scarves 14 & 15 !!

Well, my Special Olympic Scarf making is coming to an end... I've completed number 14 & 15.

#14 is made with crocheting a long chain - of any number 4x + 1 ... then ch 1, sc in 2nd chain from hook, *ch 3, skip 3 ch, sc in next ch* to the end where you sc in the last ch or sc.  Here's how  14 turned out.  I did this the long way on the scarf. Every other row I changed colors.
Here's 15 - it's the same basic pattern, only I did it the short way ..
I don't have enough yarn for another whole scarf, but I suppose I might get scraps from one of the other people in my group working on these.  I do have 3 granny squares plus a small ball of the blue. May save these for our next charity project - not sure.

So far, in our box ready to go are -
15 by me (I purchased 8 skeins, and received mom's leftovers)
2 by FH
4 by mom (Mom purchased 4 skeins)

and I know others are working on finishing theirs .. atleast 4 more that I am pretty sure will get finished.  We do have another month before we can mail these, as Wisconsin Special Olympics wants them sent after Jan 1st, but get there before Jan 21st.  So I'm aiming to mail these by Jan 4th.

I'm thinking for every 2 skeins, you can get atleast 3 scarves from them.  So from the 12 skeins that mom and I purchased, we got 19 scarves .. almost 20 (19 1/2) if you count the granny squares I have left over.

Turkey Crafts

I got this from another blog .. What do you think .. isn't it neat?

http://childmadetutorials.blogspot.com/2011/11/paper-roll-turkey.html?mid=5310

Do you remember when we would fold a reader's digest or tv guide to make a turkey centerpiece?  I've looked online for a picture, as I don't have one, but the only thing I found was these simple directions - no picture though.

http://gsleaders.org/files/seacrafts2.htm

If anyone has pictures, I'd love to share them! :)

I've also seen in the neighbor's yard, how they made a turkey out of a uncarved pumpkin.  they have cut wedges from wood and painted them, and stuck them into the pumpkin, and then also cut and pained a turkey head from wood and attached that to the front of the pumpkin.  Pretty neat!

Here's a few links to similar ideas.

Special Olympic Scarf - #11, 12, & 13 !

Hello!

I've finally finished that Special Olympic Scarf with the cable running up the middle.  This is number 11 for me! :)

It's pretty neat, but was very slow! I finished it a couple of days ago ...
I immediately started on the next one, which is a pretty simple knit pattern.
CO 19 (probably should have done just a couple of more, it's a bit narrow than it should be.)
Knit 5 rows
Purl 1 row (or knit left to right - backwards).
I added blue in the middle for a small section.

Here is the result .. took me about 3 days and is number 12 !  Finished it yesterday.

Then of course I had to start another, because I'm still not out of yarn, and so I decided to do a Crochet Lemonade Stitch and alternate blue and red .. and it ended up a bit narrow so I added a simple chain border all the way around.....

Here is Scarf Number 13 ! .. a Baker's Dozen! :) It was made between 3 and 10 pm last night.
I have started #14 as well.  It's crochet as well, and is chains held together by sc every 4th stitch.  I didn't get a picture of it yet, but it's about 1/3 of the way done .. worked on it a bit last night.  It won't be as heavy as the others, but I think it will be a neat effect.

We had the Knit & Crochet group meeting yesterday afternoon, and FH presented this scarf.  It's the second she's made.  She's doing a great job! :)

I've started bagging the scarves that I've made and collected, and we are filling a box! :)  I'm starting to wonder how much it's going to cost to mail!  I'll have to weigh and measure it soon so that I can suggest to the group the possibility of them helping to pay for postage.  I don't mind paying myself, but since it is a group project, then perhaps they would like to contribute a dollar or two towards postage.

Any thoughts?

Sunsets, Peaches, Basket Making, and Pancakes!

Hi :) I have a few things to share today.

Here's a beautiful Sunset taken Nov 3rd from our living room window.
So pretty.  We've been having a lot of really pretty sunsets lately.  I love how the silhouette of the trees play against the pretty colors of the clouds... :)

Here's a funny sight I saw this past week.  Peaches and Joel were both just laying on the living room floor.  Peaches tends to follow Joel when he's home.
I also started making my first basket on my own.  Not sure how it's turning out .. I haven't done any more than what the second picture shows .. hopefully it will turn out alright.  I am going to try to work on it today ...

As you in the US know, we had an extra hour on Sunday morning because of Daylight Savings Time ending.  Some people used that hour for sleep, but Joel wanted to make pancakes before church.  So he made us pancakes! :)  I put some bacon in the microwave and we had a delicious breakfast before heading out to church.  It was a treat to have someone else tend the pancakes so that I could eat with dh instead of being the last one to eat or eating standing up by the stove.  Great Job Joel! :)
Here is Peaches under the quilt last evening.

She and Joel stick pretty close together!  It was cute to see her peeking out from under Joel's lap quilt!

Missing

I know this is a long shot, but I have to try.  The Banner I made and showed you in this post is now missing.  On Friday night we got a gps unit stolen from the van in our driveway .. and then yesterday (Sunday) we noticed that my Snow-Family Banner was missing.  I am most concerned with the Banner, as I worked very hard on it and put a lot of love into making it.

If by chance you see it, please contact me.

Thank you.

Here's the pic again.

Catching Up, Halloween, and Crochet Mitts

Hallo! :)
I have a few things for you today.  While we were outside trying to get the yard ready for winter, I noticed this flower was just now blooming.  Do you happen to know what it is?  I don't think I've seen it before.  It's very pretty, and I do hope it grows more next year ... it's kind of spindly right now.  If I know more about it, then perhaps I could do something to help it grow.

We had Halloween/Beggar's Night this past Sunday.  Where we lived in Iowa, we lived on a street that did not get many (say zero) trick-or-treaters.  So this year, we had no idea what to expect, but figured we'd buy some candy and see if anyone came.  We did make sure to buy what we liked, however! :)  Just in case ya know! Some of the candy is in these pumpkins....If I remember right, my sister, S, made them a long time ago.

So we handed out candy, rather Rob & I did, the boys were busy on the computers ...
You can see it's still light out.  We got home from getting our pictures taken and shopping at Walmart at 4:05 pm ... Beggar's Night was from 4-7 .. so we hurried to get the cold stuff put away, and get the bags of candy opened... and we were open for business!  We saw lot's of hobos and ninja's and princesses .. a Darth Vador and a Luke ... a cute pumpkin, a couple of cowboys, the grim reaper even came for a visit .. but was very nice about it! lol Must have been the chocolate they went away with!... It was a nice night.  By 6 is was mostly done, and by then it had started to rain .. only a few kids braved the rain from 6-7 .. so that was good.  I think Rob and I both had fun.

Last week on my internet meanderings, I found this blog post showing a pattern for crocheted fingerless mitts using sock yarn.  I thought they were neat, and I have some sock yarn that is just sitting in a drawer, so I decided to try them out.  Here's a couple of pics for you.

Overall I liked the pattern.  Crocheting at that small of a gauge does take a while though! lol.  I finished the second one last night.   As you can see I used Bernat Sox yarn in a camo variegation.  I used 40 rows of ribbing, which translates to 40 sc around the wrist and up through the hands.  After the thumb, I decreased to 38 sc around, and did 13 rows of sc above the thumb.  I also adjusted the thumb a bit by doing two decreases on each of rows 3 and 5.  Seemed to work well for me.
The main body of the mitt is nice and snug, and it even works well on my dh and ds1 and they have smaller hands than I do.  I like my mitts snug though, so I think that's OK.  Not sure if they would like snugger mitts or not.  They are also nice in that with the sock yarn they are thinner, which means you can wear them inside by themselves, or you can put them on underneath other gloves to go outside and shovel snow.  I almost always double-glove when spending quantities of time outside in the winter. Especially while shoveling.
The one thing I'm not sure I like is that the ribbing is quite loose.  As you can see it easily flipped up over my wrist, which isn't a bad look, but doesn't keep your forearm warm.  If I was to do these again, I would decrease the ribbing rows, but keep the 40sc around the main body.  But I do recommend this pattern .. and the blog site!  She has lots of great ideas!  Thanks Cindy!

Today I think I'm going to bite the bullet and order some basket making reed.  Here's hoping! :)

My First Yard Banner

In our new house here, we have a Lamppost with a bar in the middle of the post.  I am not sure exactly what it's for .. whether it be a banner or a hanging pot or something, but it's only 10" wide and so typical Yard Banners in stores would not fit.  So, I took some rip-stop nylon that I had on hand, and made up this winter banner.

What do you think?

One of Four .... Pumpkins that is.

Well, I decided last night after supper that I should carve at least one of the pumpkins we had purchased a couple of weeks ago.  Of course, I was all alone in this endeavor because nobody else wanted to carve a pumpkin.  I live with a bunch of party-poopers!

Anyway .. I carved my pumpkin.  I would have done another pumpkin, but my hand and wrist were sore from just this one, so maybe I'll do the others tonight or this weekend or something.  Here's the photos .. but in the light and in the dark.

What do you think ?  Does it look like an owl?  Both carvings are on the same pumpkin.

Why a Boy and a Cat take a long time to fold sheets.

Video says it all.

Bonus:

Special Olympic Scarves

Just a couple quick pictures for you as I need to run out the door! :)

A Crochet project I finished on the road this weekend ... for the animal shelter or for a baby or something .. not sure yet.

The following picture is scarves my mom made.  She's made a total of 4 now.

This is the start of my Number 11 scarf.  It's slow going with the split / cable in the middle.
And here is a scarf from my homeschool group - a girl FH made this one.
She made up this pattern by herself .. I think she did a great job on it! :)

Sewing Mending and Basketry

Well, I've been fairly busy this last week or so, doing everything and nothing at all. Do you ever feel that way?  I'm always doing something, and the time goes by, but I don't seem to get other things done.  like cleaning, it doesn't get done very often around here, I'm just not very good housekeeper.  We aren't swimming through garbage or anything, we keep things fairly well picked up .. trash goes out, as does the recycling ... however the dusting and vacuuming doesn't get done often.  Ah well, I never said I was perfect.

One thing I did do this past week or so was to make some of our ratty fraying wash cloths look a little bit nicer. "Neater" anyway.  No more frayed edges.

I left one 'undone' so that you could see the difference. It feels a little weird to have the bound edge, but atleast the cloths will last longer and we don't have strings hanging off of them.

I saw a few birds the other day as well ... here's a few pictures.
European Starling

I think the one on the left is a female House Sparrow.

Also saw this pair of White Crowned Sparrows.  First time I've seen these!  Ever!  Aren't they nice ?

This past weekend I went to a Women's Expo at Southside Alliance Church in Sheboygan.  It was a smaller affair than I'm used to, but it was very nice.  I attended two small workshops in addition to the main speaker, and learned about Legacy of Clean 'green' cleaning products, and learned how to make this basket.

Isn't it cute!?

I absolutely loved making the basket.  I think I may order some reed and make more baskets.  It was pretty cool! :)  I searched online and found these places that seem like good suppliers.

http://www.noresta.com/  - in Michigan, but there is no minimum to get the wholesale prices.

http://www.gratiotlakebasketry.com/ - in Michigan as well - similar to Noresta in prices

http://www.easttroybasketry.com/catalog/ - in WI.  Actually only about an hour or so away from where I'm living now, but their online prices are slightly more than the other two places.  However, they do offer classes.  So it's a good place to know about.

So .. what do you think?
